There are so many beautiful sights to see while underwater that it is easy to see why underwater photography has become such a big part of scuba diving. Most scuba divers now own digital underwater cameras that they are able to use to take pictures of themselves or the things around them while underwater.

The best way to think about underwater camera housing is to think of as being a shell.

It is a shell that your digital camera puts on to protect itself from harm, a.k.a. water. This shell is durable, tough and, of course, waterproof. It seals tightly around your camera so that no water is able to get into the components of the camera itself. Thus, an underwater camera house is something that keeps your digital camera from getting destroyed by water.

It's important to know what you're looking for when buying underwater camera housing so you do not pick something that is a waste of money and/or ruins your camera. Follow the tips below:

Make Sure It Is Designed for Your Model. Any underwater camera house must be specifically cut and measured to fit a specific camera. Make sure that any housing you are looking at is designed to fit your camera model. Otherwise, it is of no use to you.

Buy It In Person. It's not the best idea to purchase something as expensive and important as a camera house online, because you should check it out in person first. Go to a local scuba shop and bring your camera along to test the fit of it. If it fits your camera snugly, it is a good camera house. Otherwise, keep looking.

1. It Ensures Your Camera Does Not Get Destroyed. When you spend hundreds of dollars on a digital camera, naturally, you expect it to work for a long time. You don't expect it to stop working after a few months use. But this is exactly what could happen if your camera is not properly protected. Most underwater video housings under $1000 are made of molded plastic. Some new shooters like the ability to see their camera through a clear plastic housing, but without care they can quickly find their camera overheating on a baking hot day in the sun.

Plastic housings are also more susceptible to lens fogging and camera sweating. Aluminum is a better heat conductor than plastic, thus making aluminum housings less likely to fog and build condensation on critical camera electronics.
